CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- Steve Paine is retiring as West Virginia's superintendent of schools.

Paine announced his retirement Friday. He has served as superintendent since 2005. At this point, there is no word on when his resignation will take effect.

Paine began his teaching career in 1978.

Paine says it's the right time to close this chapter of his educational career.
