Thank you for visiting WVEA’s online guide for parents/guardians. Here you will find a wealth of information and resources created especially for parents/guardians of students in West Virginia’s public schools.
Whatever your interest, educators welcome your involvement because the more parents/guardians and others in the community are involved in schools, the more successful students will be in the classroom.
Regardless of income, ethnicity, family circumstances, disability or school readiness, all children are entitled to an education that will help them reach their full academic, professional and personal potential. As a parent or guardian, you are the best advocate for your child. Here are some tips for assisting your child:
- Create a comfortable location for doing homework in addition to supervising its completion. Turn off the TV and eliminate other distractions.
- Assist with your child's organizational skills by making sure they have a planner and write down their assignments daily so together you can prioritize homework by deadline.
- Work with your child's teacher. Regular communication between home and school is key to improving student achievement.
- The more you share your knowledge about your child's daily life, language and culture, the more the teacher will be able to make lessons meaningful and relevant to your child's experiences.
- When students can make connections between what they learn in class with their lives outside of school, they become engaged and enthusiastic learners.
- A sense of belonging and caring relationships at home and school are essential for developing self-esteem, independence and a positive outlook on learning.
- If possible, get involved in your child's school by volunteering or attending parent meetings.
- School is a partnership between administrators, teachers, students, families and the community. It is up to all of us to help engage children in school so when they graduate they will be prepared for the challenges ahead.
